Scent is the only sense that bypasses the blood brain barrier and goes directly to memory and emotion. As kids we are exposed to scents and they are then ingrained into our being along side memories. Scents like orange or citrus may remind us of a time when we played soccer as a child. Or maybe a scent like pine or fir brings us back to hiking in the woods. A certain floral scent may remind us of our nana's garden. These scents can then be either relaxing, comforting, stimulating etc on our emotions.
According to Psychology Today "Scents can have positive effects on mood, stress reduction, sleep enhancement, self-confidence, and physical and cognitive performance," says Theresa Molnar, executive director of the Sense of Smell Institute, the research and educational arm of the perfume industry's Fragrance Foundation. By becoming more aware of the way specific odors affect you personally, you may be able to enhance your health and well-being."

In a 1991 study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) benzaldehyde, ethyl acetate, and linalool were identified as having narcotic like qualities. These chemicals are found in perfume, cologne, hairspray, laundry bleach, deodorants, laundry detergents, Vaseline lotion, shaving cream, bar soap, dishwasher detergent, aftershave, shampoo, nail color, nail enamel remover, fabric softener, dishwashing liquid, and in air fresheners.
Fragrances are actually made up of hundreds of chemicals many of which have functions known only to the fragrance manufacturers. Their formulas are trade secrets and are not shared with the public.
